    The work that is part of the series entitled 'The Hartley Elegies' is a tribute to the abstract war paintings that Marsden Hartley made between 1914 and 1915 in Berlin in homage to Karl Von Freyburg with whom he was in love, who died during the First War World.

    The representation features the Iron Cross, a military decoration in honor of the German soldiers, a chessboard, Freyburg's favorite game and the number 8, a symbol of transcendence. The date shown on the painting is Hartley's death.
